Since their epic 2009 debut album, Alchera, Melbourne instrumental darkwave/electronica band Heirs have been touring incessantly and smashing stages like nobody’s bi’ness. With Hunter, their latest record, in their arsenal, the band will be setting sail (but probably driving) for venues around Australia. T-SQUAT chatted to drummer Damian Coward about, well…..

You guys have been touring heaps. Is it hard not to go nuts on the road? How do you keep your head?

We all know each other extremely well, so we know when someone is about to snap, and we all know it is time to book a hotel away from where we are all staying.  We seem to have more issues coming home, and not knowing what to do for a good three months.

What goes through your head on stage?

When we have a good show, the repetition of what we do usually takes over, and it becomes a trance-like state, where everything becomes cyclic and subconscious.  When we have a bad show, we usually just focus on what is causing it to go wrong.  Usually, it is one of the 3745 pedals we use.

What’s your poison?

I am currently going through an energy drink phase, which seems as dangerous as any other substance.

What’s your definition of awesomeness?

The crabwalk on a skateboard, a four-hosed Yoda bong, internet speeds, jacket tassles, a tornado with peace and anarchy rugs getting thrown out of it, a unicorn wearing a top-hat and John Lennon glasses carrying a birthday cake, back abs, waverunners, dream catchers…

What were your first words?

‘Fun fun’, which was based on my favourite D-Grade Italo-disco band at the time.

What do you want a crowd to get from an Heirs show?

An enjoyable pummeling of the senses, and slight disorientation.

Did you ever find Bugs Bunny attractive when he put on a dress and played a girl bunny?

I found K-Mart catalogues alluring at the stage I was watching cartoons, so the answer is probably yes.
