ABANDONED

Amusement parks are something born of dreams. Stimulation for every sense; colours, sounds and smells all designed to tantalise and ensnare, forcing you to part with your hard earned money in the pursuit of gratification. Amazing metal sculptures that are engineered to the finest millimeter, ensuring that your supersonic travel on their tracks is as safe as it is exhilarating. Beautiful gastronomic delights greet you at every turn, ensuring you are nourished adequately in the important food groups: sugar and grease. Yes, amusement parks are a dream – for kids.

For parents however, amusement parks are a horrible nightmare. Children pester their parents mercilessly year round, until they finally and begrudgingly escort them to these overwhelming mazes of concrete and steel. Here, kids can eat so much overpriced junk food they vomit, experience terrifyingly fast and disorientating rides which will ensure they do vomit, and buy ridiculous souvenirs, full of wonderment that will last a lifetime! Or maybe the drive home (if you are lucky).

The true nightmare for all audiences can be found in New Orleans, where the Six Flags received a personal makeover from Mother Nature and all her fury. Hurricane Katrina did a lot of damage to the southern state of Louisiana - 1,836 people died, 80 percent of the city of New Orleans was submerged, 900,000 people lost power, the estimated damage was around 105 Billion US Dollars, and of course the Six Flags was completely ruined.

Like something out of an upcoming horror movie or concept art scenes from a new game being developed, the eerie photographs that follow inspire ideas of an ensuing zombie apocalypse. Beautifully destroyed buildings and features now take pride of place in the once glorious amusement park, giving it a new terrifyingly haunted vibe like something direct from Hollywood.

Your imagination runs away with you as you take in these photographs, shifting your perception of reality and putting you in a different mindset, as images of hoards of zombies and bloodthirsty clowns spring to mind, drawing you into this desolate and spooky post apocalyptic world. Seeing this once celebrated Mecca of childhood wonder and excitement now abandoned and in ruin is a truly bizarre feeling, and these images brilliantly transport the audience into an alternate universe where their imagination could make these thoughts of zombies and ghouls a reality.

These rare modern ruins only come around once a generation, and like Chernobyl or any other abandoned environment, always evoke unnatural and otherworldly thoughts in their audience. This connection between human absence and terror is exemplified by the New Orleans Six Flags, so prepare yourself for the real Zombieland and try to enjoy the beauty of the photographs, as well as the horror.
